I’m a big fan of the show Smallville and one of my favorite things about watching Smallville are the quotes from one of the main characters in the show, Lex Luthor. Here’s a great Lex Luthor quote and very true if you think about it.
“You can learn a lot from someone you hate.” ~ Lex Luthor
I thought this was a great quote, and if you think about it….. in most instances, if you “hate” someone, chances are you are jealous or envious of that person.
What is Jealousy?
We all experience feelings of jealousy and trust me, I have had my moments of jealousy. What is jealousy? According to Psychology Today, “jealousy is complex, encompassing feelings that range from fear of abandonment to rage to humiliation. Jealousy strikes both men and women when they perceive a third-party threat to a valued relationship, distinguishes it from envy, which involves a desire something someone else has.”
Does Jealousy Breed Hatred?
If you think about it, jealousy breeds hatred. If you are hating on someone out of jealousy, that essentially means that this person has something you wish you had, but don’t, such as more money, more success, a better body, etc.
Jealousy and envy are negative emotions and they don’t make you feel empowered. More often than not, these negative emotions and feelings can sometimes cause us to “act out” and make bad decisions. For instance, if you’re jealous of someone because they have a better body than you and wear clothes you wish you could fit into, are you doing anything to make improvements to your body, or are you sitting on the couch and drowning your sorrows in a pint of Ice Cream?
Jealousy is a goal to be achieved
You can turn jealousy and envy into something positive, and in order to do that, you first have to recognize and admit to yourself that you ‘re “hating” on a person, and your “hatred” is stemming from jealousy and envy. What that person has is something they have achieved that you want, and you need to look at it as a personal goal for you to achieve. Once you recognize that, look to that person as a role model… someone you can learn from.
Here’s a great quote from Tony Robbins
“If you want to be successful, find someone who has achieved the results you want and copy what they do and you’ll achieve the same results.”
