I had the opportunity to have an in depth interview with Jamin Thompson, author of the bestselling e-book, The Six Pack Secret. We spoke in great detail about a debilitating illness he had overcome as well as share our secrets to Six Pack Abs.
Jamin is a former Division 1 and professional athlete turned fitness model that has been featured in various commercials and photo shoots for companies such as ESPN, Nike, Reebok, and Wilson Sporting Goods. He has worked extensively with athletes on the professional and collegiate level and uses his real world, in the trenches experience to also help others unleash their true fitness potential.
Jamin uses his real world, in the trenches experience to help others unleash their true fitness potential. Using the same type of high intensity programs and techniques that create world class athletes, Jamin helps “regular Joes” unlock their genetic potential using a no B.S., no gimmick approach which is one of the things I really like about him.
Jamin has written over 200 articles on fitness and nutrition for many popular websites and magazines across the world including bodybuilding.com and Jamin is the author of The 6 Pack Secret: Fat Burning Secrets of The World’s Top Fitness Models.
Jamin and I have been following each other on line for the past 5 years and I’m proud to have him as a colleague and friend and have chatted on the phone many times over the years. His articles are top notch and he’s been a guest blogger on my FitTalkNews.com site.
Overcoming a debilitating illness
Jamin suffered with a very debilitating illness called Crohn’s Disease most people don’t know about and his bounce back from this illness became the catalyst for his famous Six Pack Abs which I have envied for years!
Jamin was an athlete through High School and was ranked the #1 Jr. Tennis Player, and received a scholarship to the University of Miami. During the first semester of his sophomore year, he suddenly became very ill. At first he thought he had food poisoning. He was nauseas, vomiting, had diarrhea and severe abdominal cramps. After experiencing these symptoms for more than two weeks, becoming sicker, and losing a lot of weight, he knew what he had was more serious than food poisoning and went to see a Gastroenterologist. It was at this time he was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease which causes inflammation of the small intestine.
Jamin was told that he would be sick for the rest of his life and would be taking prescription medication to treat it. With this news, Jamin’s aspirations of becoming a professional tennis player and making a living as one were suddenly gone.
According to medical experts, there is no cure for Crohn’s Disease and many patients have surgery to remove the diseased intestine. The downside is that the disease does come back despite surgery because it is an auto-immune disorder and there is nothing you can do about that.
Jamin sought treatment in Washington, D.C., with a holistic doctor by the name of George Mitchell. Dr. Mitchell put Jamin on a detoxification program and changed his diet. After following Dr. Mitchell’s plan for six months, Jamin was starting to feel well enough to return to school.
After two years of following Dr. Mitchell’s protocol, Jamin was able to make a full recovery and continues to use the same techniques to remain healthy.
While I am not a doctor, from all the reading and research I do, many health issues and auto-immune diseases that have become so common place come from the gut – i.e., having an imbalance of bad bacteria to good bacteria which stems from the typical North American diet.
The Simple Truth
I asked Jamin why so many people struggle with fat loss. One of the biggest reasons many people struggle with fat loss is because they are fed a bunch of misleading hype through the media and advertisers.
The truth – forget the hype. There is no fat loss miracle. The simple truth is you need to train hard and your diet needs to be “on point”.
Another big mistake which keeps people from burning body fat is that they are training incorrectly. They tend to focus on doing extra cardio and not doing enough heavy compound, multi-joint strength training exercises. Heavy lifting packs on the muscle and the more muscle you build, the more fat your body burns.
Jamin’s 10 Rules to Fat Loss
1. Food should be natural, fresh, pure and whole.
2. Always try to maintain an 80% alkaline:20% acid ratio.
3. Be active
4. Eliminate the 3 silent killers from you diet – white sugar, white flour and refined salt.
5. Drink lots of water
6. Eat in moderation
7. Never fry your foods or use heated oils (even olive oil) to cook your food.
8. Eat lots of fiber
9. Let nature work its magic to heal the body
10. Keep variety in your diet
Combine these principles with a strategic nutrition and workout plan that will help you burn fat, maintain your current muscle mass or add a few extra pounds of muscle.
Fat loss doesn’t mean you go on a crazy starvation diet or do hours of cardio. Aggressive low calorie diets make the body burn more than fat, slowing down your metabolism. In the end, you’re actually getting fatter even though you may have lost weight. The weight loss will come from muscle, tissue and water; NOT body fat.
The 6 Pack Mindset
One of the keys to weight loss is your mindset. According to Jamin, they key mindset to 6 Pack Abs is to believe in yourself. If you don’t think you can do it, or think you don’t have the genetics, or any other negative belief, then it’s never going to happen.
You also need to have that burning desire to achieve Six Pack Abs…..not just say you want them. If you don’t think you can become better, improve and stop having that body you love to hate, then you won’t succeed. If you don’t have it – that burning desire, then you won’t have 6 pack abs.
When it comes to fitness, it’s virtually impossible to reach your goals without making a commitment to your goals.
Get off the Hamster Wheel!
Jamin likes to refer to long, boring, treadmill cardio as being on a hamster wheel. Stop it! The simple truth, it’s counterproductive. What you are doing is burning hard earned muscle, not fat and don’t we all want to burn fat!
Work out Effectively & Efficiently
Your workouts should take anywhere from 45 – 60 minutes. If you’re in the gym for more than an hour, you’re not working out efficiently and effectively. You should be training on average 3-5 hours a week.
